Seniors tee off at social golf days at Glanville Golf Course
To combat the growing issue of social isolation among older Australians, each Thursday morning, dozens of seniors and veterans in the Semaphore and Port Adelaide area are taking part in social golf days at the community-focused Glanville Golf Course, using regular connection to support health and reduce loneliness.
The Seniors Social Program, delivered in partnership with Henley & Grange RSL as part of their Veteran Vitality and Engagement Initiative, brings together older South Australians for nine holes of social golf, a hot beverage and light refreshments in a consistent weekly setting – playing host to a growing number of attendees.
The program provides a format that is accessible and easy to maintain for many members of the community. Zac Packard, Venue Manager at Glanville Golf Course said the program has quickly become part of members’ weekly routine:
“Our members get some exercise, plenty of fresh air and a good laugh along the way. You don’t have to be a great golfer – you just turn up, have a hit and enjoy the outdoors.”
Welcoming and low‑pressure
“The program intentionally removes barriers,” Zac continued. “There’s no competition, no skill requirement and no expectation. This has helped us create a consistent group of regular members who share similar life experiences.”
While the format is simple, the benefits are significant: contributing to improved mobility, cardiovascular health and energy levels.
“Our members feel more connected, more active and more supported. For some, the program provides a return to a familiar sport; for others, it becomes a new interest that opens the door to meaningful relationships,” Zac concluded.
For Henley & Grange RSL members, participation is fully funded through the RSL’s Veteran Vitality and Engagement Initiative. All other senior card holders can attend for $9, removing cost as a barrier to participation. This reinforces how local partnerships can deliver high‑impact outcomes for communities.
